Pressestimmen

“Hilarious and Heartbreaking. Comedy shouldn’t take courage, but it made an exception for Bassem.” (Jon Stewart)“A smart, refreshing and hilariously funny account.” (Salon.com)“An entertaining and eminently readable book about a Middle Eastern country written for Americans. If you have been bluffing your way through political conversations pretending to know the differences between Islamists and secular Muslims, Youssef’s book is an easy, painless way to rectify that error.” (The Ringer)If you want to understand the Arab Spring-even though it was really the African Spring, set off by a ‘small puny motherfucking country called Tunisia’-then this odd book is just the guide. Buchrückseite

In Revolution for Dummies, Bassem Youssef—the “Jon Stewart of Egypt” and creator of Albernameg, the most popular television show in Egypt’s history—chronicles his transformation from heart surgeon to political satirist, and offers crucial insight into the Arab Spring, the Egyptian Revolution, and the turmoil roiling the modern Middle East. With his incendiary satire and knack for unabashedly mocking dictators, Youssef rose to fame in the middle of the Egyptian Revolution. Eventually accused of insulting the Egyptian presidency, and even Islam itself, he was arrested in 2013. Though his case was eventually dismissed, Youssef’s show was terminated, and he fled to the United States in fear for his life.Youssef proudly and hysterically riffs on the hypocrisy, instability, and corruption manifest in Egyptian politics: everything from how the government tried to cover up the violent clashes in Tahrir Square to how the military announced they had created the world’s first AIDS machine that could cure anyone of the disease to how officials were convinced Youssef was a CIA operative recruited by Jon Stewart, on a secret mission to bring down the country through sarcasm. (Yes, it gets that insane.)This is the version of the Arab Spring you’ve never heard, the one that doesn’t get glossed over by the media. This is the real story—a tale of guts and glory, and of how jokes are often mightier than the sword.

This book is an account of how the author experienced the Egyptian Arab spring. A heart surgeon by training, he became the author and the host of the most watched comedy show in the Arab world. He has been called the "Arab Jon Stewart". His insightful and hilarious running commentary of events did not fail to upset those in power throughout the tumultuous times --representatives of the Mubarak regime as well as radical Muslims and the Egyptian army. Eventually, their massive threats managed to shut down the show despite its tremendous popularity. Why did the Arab spring fail? Or is it too early to tell that is has, just like Zhou En Lai said in the 1970ies that it was too early to evaluate the consequences of the French Revolution of 1798? Who is to blame for its failure for now? Is Egypt different from Western countries because of its predominantly Muslim population? These questions might lead a Western reader to take up the book. The author gives plenty of responses to these questions, drawing many parallels to current events in the U. S.His style is very entertaining, full of expletives, and really a joy to read. Unfortunately, he has to talk in a funny way about very serious and sad subjects. But that is not his fault. I sincerely recommend this book to everybody who wants a first-hand account of an important period in recent Middle Eastern history. I admire the author's courage as he hosted his show and as he wrote the book and I sincerely hope that the high hopes the Egyptians had at the start of the Arab spring might still come true at a later stage.

the book is written in a very simple fashion with a lot of light humor in there.it's kinda funny and sad at the same time to relive what i've gone through during this period.Bassem Youssef is a person i truly respect and admire so i'm really glad that i could support him in any way i can.totally recommend this book to everyone

This should not be read as a literary piece, and the author makes this clear in several parts of the book. The making and breaking of his career and the author's witty/poignant analysis of political events in Egypt makes it a fascinating read, especially for those new to understanding the Egyptian Revolution.
